Before I write anything further, I’d like to point you to this link:
This is a declaration of human rights for mental health advice seekers and patients.
Today, almost everyone (capable or incapable…. qualified or unqualified) is talking about mental health. Almost everyone has become a counsellor…. to his/her family… to their friends… and so on and so forth.
The internet is full of all kinds of advice….
Before anyone gives you any advice about your state of mind, you should ask them, “Are you a licensed practitioner? Are you aware of the rights of a patient or any fellow seeker? Do you have a degree in psychiatry?”
The declaration states that a patient or any individual has a right to refuse any advice or treatment that he/she feels inappropriate. It also lists a lot of other rights and is a must read for every patient, practitioner and anyone dealing with mental health.
Today, there is a growing awareness about mental health and almost every organization is running campaigns about mental health.
However, it’s important to understand that psychiatry is a science and just like there are good doctors and bad doctors, there are good psychiatrists and bad psychiatrists and psychologists.
In all cases, YOU have a CHOICE to accept or reject any treatment, therapy, counseling or advice being given to you.
A lot of times, patients with various conditions may feel a pressure to undergo treatment just because they have been deemed to do so.
However, it is important for everyone to realize that mental health patients are also human beings and they have certain human rights too.
There are certain treatments that can only be given by licensed practitioners who are qualified in their SCIENCE. And more than being a licensed practitioner…. YOU have a choice to CHOOSE your doctor and treatment.
Just like you change doctors…. because you don’t feel comfortable with them…. same way you can change psychologists or psychiatrists if you feel uncomfortable with them.
We need to understand that above everything else is FREE WILL.
All individuals have FREE WILL…. whether they are mental health patients or not.
This is generic information but is most important to be shared amongst everyone.
YOU HAVE A CHOICE…. to lead your life the way you want….
No one can force any treatment or medication on you without your consent.
If everyone understands and implements their FREE WILL “responsibly”….. That will be a true win of HEALTH I think.
